The Day Before Halloween

My ancient old husband says that back in his day they only got Halloween night to do stuff on. Fortunately our children are not so deprived. We started the day before the day before Halloween, dressing like twins for school, we may not be in school yet but why let that stop us, and baking cookies for our pumpkin party.

The day before Halloween we got up early and got ready for the party. Got the new playhouse all decorated, spiced apple cider warmed and supplies gathered. Then people started to come, friends and the cousins. We painted pumpkins and carved pumpkins to our hearts content.

After lunch and a good nap we got our costumes on and headed for Chadron where the Kiwanis Club put on a trunk or treat on main street. The businesses and a biker club handed decorated and gave out candy. They had done a great job and we had the best time.

Then we were invited along to a Halloween party at the bouncy houses. A building where a local church provides a place for children to come and play, I don’t know how to explain it but it’s great check out their page here. The Goblin Child ran about like fiend. The pictures I have of her are a blur because that’s all she was running past.

Then to supper to cap the night. And still tomorrow to go.

A Bed in A Box

It really is an amazing thing. We got a box a couple of feet square and maybe four foot long. And a flatter longer box. Open them up and with a little putting together and unrolling “poof” it’s a bed. A cool foam bed that feels nothing like a mattress with springs. Did it solve all soreness issues? No. It’s a bed not a miracle but it helped.

Horsey Goings Ons

We have been doing lots of horse stuff lately, which compared to a long summer of nothing means a couple of rides. I have had 8 up with me on coyote a couple of times. He loves it, giggling and squirming to look out. It feels so much more secure carrying him in a wrap than it did just carrying The Goblin Child. I know all the safety freaks out there would have a fit about riding with a baby period.Β  Whatever. Kids can get hurt doing anything, I understand going down slides with parents is an incredibly dangerous undertaking. We have to decide what is an acceptable risk. So anyway, I only wish there was a way to carry him forward facing.

The Goblin Child loves her Princess Onna as much as ever. Every time I say that we should catch Coyote and go for a ride she has a meltdown demanding that we ride Onna instead. She’s a nice little horse and a blast to ride, I love zippy hot little horses, but it’s back to the acceptable risk thing. I trust Coyote completely and am willing to entrust my children’s safety to him. We’re not there yet with Onna, not double at least. I will happily lead her around on Onna. Without her helmet lately it seems.

Today though, yesterday by now, I remembered her helmet. I am determined that she will learn to ride bareback but she is more comfortable in a saddle. So, I suppose, for now I will let her use a saddle. Just until she feels more secure. We saddled Princess Onna and put 8 in the back pack and went for a nice long walk leading Onna. If this keeps working I am all for it. I got my exercise, 8 was very jealous and The Goblin Child didn’t fall off. And enjoyed it immensely.

Speaking of Onna, she is not bred. Not surprisingly, difficult little mare that she is, she didn’t settle with AI. We may try again next year. The gentleman who owns the stud had offered this year to meet in the middle and pick her up. We could not manage with one very small child, corn planting and cattle working, next year we, if we try again, we will figure out a way and try pasture breeding.

Just for Grandma

So anybody else can stop reading now. Or not.

Thank you Grandma. Wish that we were trick or treating at your house for real but this is second best. Happy Halloween!

Speaking of my Mother

I was looking for pictures of my mom on a horse and could find surprisingly few. It dawned on me that it was because she was always busy getting us on horses. And maybe that growing up she was the adult with the camera but I had fun looking. Here’s what I found and the few she has sent me:

Baby Led Weaning

All it means is letting them feed themselves. With real food not baby food.

We are trying this very happily with 8. Not exactly as prescribed by the experts. I never follow instructions exactly. The instructions say to let them feed themselves completely. We can’t quite handle the mess. So we help him with the worst of it. He also gets a sippy cup with of yogurt, he loves vanilla wont eat plain, when mixed with ground peaches it’s all I can do not to steal it from him, for him to feed himself with. Anything to avoid having to spoon feed.

He loves graham crackers, watermelon, bananas and spaghetti. Steamed carrot sticks were a mixed success. He likes them but even knowing that they needed steamed for a ridiculously long time I didn’t steam them long enough and they are a bit much for him to gnaw through. The hard crust of french bread will keep him occupied endlessly. Corned beef and cabbage is a surprisingly good baby food and I hope to put on a stew this week. Full of carrots, potatoes and meat and cooked till soft and mushy it may not sound tasty but it’s perfect for him.
